Let the games begin

The battle is on; and competition is good for the consumer. Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 isn’t alone in the next-generation video games console market anymore.

Sony finally launched its much anticipated and delayed Playstation 3 to long queues across Tokyo in a much-needed boost to its faltering recovery. With only 100’000 units available at launch day, many of the boys and girls, suited professionals and even some grey-haired seniors who braved the cold Tokyo night in the hope of getting their hands on one of the prized machines were left disappointed.

From a gamer’s perspective, this hopefully will mean more quality than quantity as gamers generally shift their demands from title numbers to title content. As learned from the past, a couple of must-have games per console can trigger more sales of the console units than a multitude of titles which are nothing more than a brushed up recyling of earlier versions. After all, the market share is counted by sold console units rather than sold game titles.
